Secret Wars: Art Battling.....This is dope!!!!

Battling amongst MCs and B-boys is nothing new. However Secret Wars takes this concept in a different direction as it features two competitors squaring off in a 90 minute art freestyle session. Each contestant is given a huge 20 foot mural with no prior knowledge of themes and must then put something together in an interactive environment as art-lovers look on. No sketch-books are allowed effectively ensuring that this is truly on the spot ingenuity. Winners are determined via a three point system. Two judges as well as a crowd-component measured via a decibel reader are used to determine a winner. The images seen here were taken from an event that took place in London.

The last work we saw from Above was his piece featuring a guy jacking an ATM machine and giving the loot away, a grimier Robin Hood to say the least. Continuing his generous efforts, we see a new piece from Above entitled Playground Love. The stencil artwork is executed masterfully with a lovey-dovey message wishing everyone a Happy Valentines Day. Check it out!

JR FOCUSES THE EYES OF THE WORLD ON THE WOMEN OF KENYA ...thats sick

Text via supertouchart.com:French outdoor installation artist (call it “street art” if you must) extraordinaire JR continues his epic 28 MILLIMETER: WOMEN Project with the unveiling this week of his most ambitious stage yet in KIBERA, KENYA. Reconnecting with the subjects he photographed over a year ago in the city—one of the largest slums in Africa—at the start of his mission to portray on a grand scale the unseen and unempowered women of the world, the reunion was an especially poignant moment for the artist. With the help of enthusiastic residents, JR managed to cover 2,000 square meters of local rooftops with photos of the eyes and faces of the women of Kibera, giving them a monumental voice and presence in a city where their own existence is often marginalized. Most of the subjects had their photos installed atop their own roofs and for the first time in JRs global series of installations, the material used is water-resistant enabling that the photo itself to protect the fragile houses in the upcoming rainy season. In order to further spread his message throughout the massive city, JR also encapsulated the local train that runs through the area twice daily with the eyes of local women alongside those of women photographed in Brazil, India, Cambodia, and other parts of Africa whose stories and images reveal a global solidarity of plight and purpose. The pinnacle of the experience, however, comes when the eyes on the moving train align with the static bottom halves of the subject’s faces posted along the train’s embankment, completing the smiling portraits for a split second in rapid succession before moving on to the next village where the experience is repeated

Further looks have surfaced regarding artist Krink’s team-up with Kidrobot on a Krink signature mailbox. Replicated to scale, the mailbox features Krink’s trademark drip styles. The toy will be released on December 18th both online and at Kidrobot flagship stores and limited to 500 pieces.

Like the Platzhalter bookshelf I discussed yesterday, the REK features an ingenious design that is both visually interesting and practical for those who accumulate a lot of books.

Instead of splitting down the middle like the Platzhalter, the REK expands and collapses like an accordion to eliminate negative space on the shelf. As you book collection grows, the shelves can be pulled apart in a configuration of your choosing. To be honest, I love the design—but if you have ever tried to move even a small bookshelf you know that trying to alter something this large when it is laden with books would probably be more trouble that it is worth.
